People are becoming more aware of the health benefits of beer, but is beer better for you than wine? There are a number of benefits that both drinks provide. Whether it’s heart health or stress relief, there’s no question that both beverages can help you be healthier. Still, there may be a clear winner. It all depends on what you’re looking for when it comes to staying healthy.

Health Benefits of Wine

Without a doubt, wine is best known for being heart healthy, but there’s more to it than that. Red wine can also decrease one’s chances of cancer. The real shocker though is that wine drinkers reduce their chances of death by one third over non-drinkers. That’s compared to only a 10% deduction in the chance of death found in those that drink beer or hard liquor over non-drinkers. Another shocking find is that wine drinkers are more apt to eat healthier than beer drinkers. Those that drink beer seem to gravitate towards fattier foods, while wine drinkers may prefer fruits, vegetables and low-fat cheeses. Do all these benefits mean that wine is the healthier choice? Not necessarily.

Health Benefits of Beer

The first benefit worth noting is the beer is more nutritious than wine. Beer contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, including many of the B vitamins. Beer also contains as many antioxidants as wine and best of all, beer contains less calories. In fact, beer is the clear winner when it comes to counting calories because beer drinkers can opt for brands that contain less than 70 beer calories per serving. Beer is also good for the heart reducing the chances of heart disease by helping eliminate the amino acid homocysteine in the blood.

Which is better? The actual answer is that both beverages offer several health benefits. Both beer and wine help protect the heart and while beer may be more nutritious and lower in calories, wine has been known to reduce the chances of death by one third compared to only 10% in beer drinkers. Why not reap the benefits of both by enjoying wine one night and beer the next? More importantly, if you prefer one option over the other, drink the one you like best. It doesn’t matter which you choose because both offer such great benefits. Just remember that the exact benefits will vary from white to red wine and light to dark beers.
